A Hollister man has been charged in court with assault with a firearm on police along with four other related charges and three special allegations for being a felon in possession of a gun.

Anthony Pedragon, 46, appeared in San Benito County Superior Court today for an arraignment hearing. Pedragon did not enter a plea because the judge had to appoint a new attorney after the suspect's appointed public defender, Arthur Cantu, said he could not take the case due to a conflict of interest. The judge sent Pedragon back to San Benito County Jail on $15,000 bail and scheduled him to be back in court May 6 to complete his arraignment. His current attorney, Elvira Robinson, was unavailable for comment today.

According to police, officers arrived at Pedragon's home Saturday evening to investigate a report of battery. While interviewing witnesses, the officers heard a gun shot from across the street. Officer Rosie Betanio, police spokeswoman, said the officers and witnesses immediately took cover, then heard another gun shot before several glass bottles were thrown at them.

Officers were informed someone had jumped over a nearby fence and into the backyard of another home at 818 Central Ave. Pedragon was arrested in front of the house, and police found a gun in the backyard of the residence. No one was injured during the incident.
