Teachers' rally to oppose budget cuts

May 7, 2008
 By Kristen Tolleson

The Monterey County Education Coalition Partners will host a rally a week from today to protest the governor's proposed budget cuts.

The protests are set to take place from 4 p.m. to 6 p.m. at the following locations: the corners of Fourth and San Benito streets, Nash Road and Airline Highway, and Nash Road and San Benito Street.

There will be more than 100 teachers, parents and community members participating in the rally, according to a press release from the group.

Gov. Arnold Schwarzenegger is expected to release his revised 2008-09 state budget on May 14. The cuts for public schools are estimated at around $5 billion, according to the release.

Locally, the organization notes, the budget cuts amount to a loss of more than $24,000 per classroom. The California Teachers Association reports that statewide more than 14,000 teachers received layoff notices this school year.
