The extensive detour at the intersection of Sunnyslope and Airline Highway is slated to be finished sometime during the week of Aug. 15, coinciding with the first week of school.
Local residents will breathe a sigh of relief when the awkward alternative route on which they have driven is eliminated as construction of the bypass progresses.
The Highway 25 bypass project will create a six-lane road from Sunnyslope Road to East Park Street and four lanes between East Park and Bolsa Road. There eventually will be six intersections with stoplights along the bypass.
According to the Council of San Benito County Governments' Web site, the project is approximately 2.7 miles in length and will ease traffic congestion in Hollister when completed while providing a convenient connection from Hollister to Highway 25 north.
"We are doing really well with the detour at Sunnyslope Road," commented Mary Dinkuhn, transportation planning manager.
"The sidewalk is complete adjacent to Airline Highway as well, so the intersection will be clear for driving very soon."
Dinkuhn went on to caution all residents, particularly students traveling to nearby schools, to use designated crosswalks and sidewalks at all times, follow directions of flaggers and allowing extra time to get to where they are going.
The bypass project is set to be finished in mid- to late October.
