Doreen Crumrine, the most recent CEO and longtime employee of Chamberlain's Children Center in Hollister, no longer works for the residential care facility for behaviorally disturbed children.

Crumrine's son in law, formerly a maintenance worker at Chamberlain's, also left the institution on the same day recently, and deputies of the Sheriff's Office were present for a civil standby.

Chamberlain's officials declined to disclose details of the departure, and Sheriff Curtis Hill noted how it was one of many civil standbys the office conducts on a routine basis.

Crumrine has "moved on in her professional career," according to a statement made to the Free Lance by Mari Davis, president of the nonprofit organization's board of directors.

"She left in good regard," Davis said. "She was here for 30 years, and sometimes it is time for people to move on."

Davis acknowledged, meanwhile, that Crumrine's son-in-law did not leave in the same, high regard. Davis also confirmed that the two departures were connected but declined to state specifics.

Hill confirmed that his office supplied deputies for a civil standby, but said he could not comment on the reason for the request or give an account of what happened during the standby.

"We do civil standbys all the time," said Hill.

Chamberlain's statement, provided by Davis, continued: "We are currently searching for an executive director and plan to have the position filled by spring. Our interim executive director is Patrick Ellis who has worked for Chamberlain's for the last eight years. Our main goal is always keeping the kids happy and at peace."

Davis added that Chamberlain's just underwent licensing and that the organization received an "A+" grade. "We are in great shape and ready to go into phase two of our building plans," she said.

Chamberlain's is in the process of replacing its four houses on the property.
