HOLLISTER

Juan Barragan started his co-salutatorian speech at the San Benito High School graduation by making a point to thank his parents.

He talked of the "many sacrifices" they made and he told them they "will always be the most important people in my life."

Barragan plans to attend the University of California, Berkeley in the fall, to eventually pursue a triple major in electrical engineering, economics and Japanese.

"I have set a goal," said Barragan, honored throughout the ceremony for his academic successes during his four years at the 3,000-student school. "The goal is to be able to help you instead of you helping me."

He followed up by showing gratitude to his former migrant counselor. Barragan said he always will remember the day he told him he never should answer a question with, "I don't know."

Barragon was among around 650 students in the school's Class of 2009 to graduate today on the baseball field at San Benito High. The 114th commencement ceremony at the high school followed the theme of "The Amazing Race."

With thousands of people watching the outdoor graduation on a pleasant morning, there were speeches by the superintendent, the principal, the Associated Student Body president, the senior class president, keynote speaker Charlton Scullard, the two co-salutatorians and the valedictorian.
