SBC Rodeo 'alive and bucking'

From bull riding to pony-express races and steer stopping to barrel races, the 76th Annual San Benito County Saddle Horse Show and Rodeo has entertainment for everyone.

Some preliminary events already have kicked off, while the parade and fiesta afterward are set for 6:15 p.m. Thursday along San Benito Street and official rodeo activities are set to start at 7 p.m. Friday at Bolado Park.

There was concern the economy would have a negative impact on number of entries and attendance, said Saddle Horse Show & Rodeo Office Manager Ann Strickland.

"We were thinking, with the economy, we were going to have some problems with it," she said. "We are up 30 people over last year. We thought we would use a lot of contestants."

She went on: "In spite of the economy, people want to have some entertainment in the area. The rodeo is alive and bucking in San Benito County."

The featured entertainer this year is Tomas Garcilazo, a Mexico City native and trained Charro, or horseman. Garcilazo will do two shows each day on the track at the rodeo featuring traditional Mexican horsemanship and roping skills. Having already traveled to Texas, Oklahoma, Oregon and locations throughout California, Garcilazo brings three horses and roping prowess to share his experiences with many people.

"It's part of my heritage and culture," he said. "I'm taking my son with me, passing it from generation to generation."

After he completes his shows at the San Benito County rodeo, Garcilazo will continue doing shows in California, Utah and Oregon.
