Police deployed throughout Hollister for weekend
Jul 6, 2009
 By The Free Lance Staff

For the busy holiday weekend, the Hollister Police Department received support from the Department of Alcohol Beverage Control, California state parole officers, the San Benito County Probation Department and the California Highway Patrol.

HPD Capt. Carlos Reynoso said that he didn't have any numbers of the officers but there were more on patrol than most other weekends.

The focus of the police work was not delegated strictly to downtown but to other areas as well.

"We had lots of activities throughout the city, not just downtown," Reynoso said. "These officers that were assisting were paired up (with Hollister officers) and were at places outside of downtown."

Much of the work was focused on policing some of the large block parties, fireworks complaints and fights that had broken out.

"With parties, they get so big and these things happen," Reynoso said.

Consideration was taken in for people who might show up for the rally, much like what happened in 2006.

"You have to take that into consideration," Reynoso said. "Through intelligence you get from the state ... you have to take that into account."

He added that contrary to media reports on Friday, there were not thousands of motorcyclists that descended upon the city over the weekend.

Officers from the various agencies only worked one day and were not there for the entire holiday weekend. Also, some of the officers did not charge the city for their services.

"Thanks to them, they provided great support and services to San Benito County," Reynoso said.
