On Saturday and Sunday, the San Benito County Historical Society is set to host a Civil War event at the Tres Pinos Historical Park featuring a real Southern wedding, an 1863 school and an era blacksmith.

The event begins at 9 a.m. Saturday and finishes at 5 p.m. and then re-opens at 10 a.m. Sunday and concludes at 3 p.m. It is presented by the National Civil War Association and the San Benito County Historical Society.

Organizers are asking the public to participate in the event and not just walk through the park and hear a lecture.

The main attraction will be a boarding house that has been outfitted with Civil War-era furniture, carpet, drapes and other furnishings. The boarding house operator will be wearing period clothing, cooking food from that era and organizing a plot to steal contraband from the Union army troops. She will be providing her own china, silverware and crystal for the meals.

The saloon will feature period card games and ice-cold sarsaparilla.

Along with the boarding house and saloon, the event is set to feature a pharmacist in the pharmacy, a teacher in the school house and a jailer in the jail. There will also be a wedding, a shooting and a jury trial on Saturday.

Sunday is set to feature a sermon and a picnic with fried chicken.

Admission to the event is free for everyone and parking is only $3 per car. For more information on the event or to make reservations, contact Teresa Thompson at (408) 859-3764.
