A slate of activities are planned for Veterans Day in Hollister that will culminate with the eighth annual parade downtown.

Before the Veterans Day Parade kicks off at 1:30 p.m., an array of activities will begin at 7 a.m., when the League of United Latin American Citizens will hold its yearly breakfast at San Benito High School.

From there, at 10 a.m. a veterans fair is scheduled at which there will be discussion on available benefits to local veterans. There also will be a mobile van from Santa Cruz County that offers readjustment counseling for veterans, said Frankie Arballo, co-chairwoman of this year's parade activities.

An annual ceremony in front of the Veterans Memorial Building will begin at 11:11 a.m. Arballo noted how there will be several speakers and a group of student singers from Sacred Heart School will perform.

At noon, the Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 9242 is set to host its annual barbecue in the Dugout in the Veterans Memorial Building, Arballo said. Its proceeds will benefit the veterans group.

The Veterans Day Parade itself is organized by the VFW and the American Legion. It is sponsored by San Benito Bank, the City of Hollister and the Free Lance and Pinnacle newspapers.

Arballo noted how she is "pleased" with the volunteer support offered for this year's parade.

"Come on down and let's support our veterans," she said.

She also said locals should "keep in mind our active-duty military."

"We concentrate on our veterans, and this is what it's all about," she said, "but let's not forget about our active-duty military."

The forecast for Wednesday, meanwhile, calls for cloudy skies with highs in the mid-60s and lows in the mid-40s.
