HPD issues 118 parking tickets in downtown enforcement
Nov 12, 2009

Hollister police started enforcing parking restrictions again in early October. Drivers should keep in mind looking at time limits on signs when they park if they want to avoid a ticket.

The Hollister Police Department issued 118 parking citations in the downtown area since Oct. 1 when the enforcement began, said Sergeant David Westrick, HPD community services officer.

The majority of the citations, 52, were for overtime parking, according to the figures requested by the Free Lance. The next largest group, 38 were for improper curbing. Only a single citation, meanwhile, was issued for improperly parking in a space designated for disabled persons.

The Hollister Downtown Association earlier this year proposed the reinstated parking fines downtown while representing businesses concerned about fellow shops' employees using up many of the available spaces in the area. Council members approved the revived enforcement, and officials expect the program to be revenue neutral.

Parking Pointers

According to the California Vehicle Code, blue markings indicate parking is limited exclusively to the vehicles of disabled persons.

The vehicle code generally requires vehicles parked on a one-way roadways with adjacent curbs park with the right-hand wheels parallel with and within 18 inches of the right-hand curb. Motorcycles must be parked with at least one wheel or fender touching the right-hand curb.

Parking time limits are indicated by signs along streets and at entrances to or in parking lots.
