Congressman Sam Farr, D-Carmel, testified on Tuesday in support of his proposed Pinnacles National Park Act, a bill that would elevate the local area to National Park status.

"Pinnacles may not be as big as Yosemite and Yellowstone, but it enjoys a rich tapestry of resources, history, science, recreation and splendor," Rep. Farr said during his testimony, according to a press release from his office. "It would make a wonderful addition to the National Park roster. I truly believe this public trust should be elevated to National Park status so future generations will be able to enjoy its wonder."

During his testimony before the House Subcommittee on National Parks, Forests and Public Lands, Farr read part of a letter from producers Ken Burns and Dayton Duncan - who were involved in the PBS series called "The National Parks: America's Best Idea - in support of the Pinnacles National Park Act.

"Grounded in the tradition of recognizing the special importance of a national monument by extending its designation to that of a national park, we wish to wholeheartedly endorse H.R. 3444 and the creation of Pinnacles National Park," the letter reads, according to the press release.

Proclamations and letter of support for the legislation also were submitted by San Benito and Monterey County supervisors and the California Wilderness Project.
