County resident Paul Hamilton attended San Benito High School during the early 1990s, the same time as John Patrick Bedell, whom he knew as "Pat."

Hamilton considered Bedell as "kind of a family acquaintance," as he recalls his family and Bedell's family spending Christmas Eve together at the ranch of a mutual acquaintance.

"I just kind of knew him from that relationship and went to school with his brothers," said Hamilton, who commuted to Gavilan College with Bedell's younger brother, Matt.

"I didn't know this side of him," Hamilton said this morning. "I feel terrible about it. They are an intelligent family. I had no idea about this anti-government stuff. It sounds like he just became unhinged."
