Calfire crews this morning were expecting to contain a wild fire in the New Idria area that had burned about 20 acres as of about 9 a.m. today, according to a press release from the agency.
Firefighters on four fixed wing aircraft, one helicopter, seven engines, three water tenders, two bulldozers, two hand crews, and three overhead personnel were responding to a fire that has involved 20 acres of vegetation and numerous structures in the area of New Idria in eastern San Benito County.
Full containment was expected on the fire shortly at the time of the statement's release after 9:30 a.m. The fire started sometime during the night and because of the remoteness of the area, the report of the fire was delayed. The cause is under investigation, according to Calfire.
With this fire starting overnight, it should serve as a reminder that fires can start and spread at any time of the day or night. Calfire wants to remind the public that maintaining 100 feet of defensible space may help to save lives and property.
