City accepts $71K grant to increase DUI enforcement
Nov 3, 2009
 By Marty Richman

The state awarded the grant, part of which will be used for sting operations outside the courthouse.
It just got tougher to get away with driving under the influence in Hollister.

The city has accepted a $71,000 grant from the state to beef up its DUI enforcement and awareness programs. Council members formally accepted the award at their Monday meeting.

The money will be used to pay for the operations and equipment in support of additional DUI checkpoints, saturation enforcement of trouble spots and sting operations.

The sting operations will include observing individuals with recently suspended licenses - such as people leaving the courthouse - to ensure they comply with court orders, Police Chief Jeff Miller told council members.

The California Office of Traffic Safety awarded the grant, which will be paid against qualifying expenditures on a reimbursement basis. It does not require any matching funds from the city.

Miller informed the council members that the grant application was initiated by members of the Hollister Police Department, primarily Sgt. Eric Olsen.
