Letters: Failure of community in United Way closing
In regard to United Way closing, what happened to neighbors helping neighbors?
Dear Editor,
A few words in a recent letter from the local United Way leadership shriek out for clarification or amplification. "The new standards ... to meet the new global-based mission of UWA." Since when has the United Way had a "Global Mission"?
What has become of neighbors helping neighbors, and locals helping locals? I ask for guidance on these new standards. If United Way new seeks to save the world abroad, we are well advised to dump UWA, and care for our own first.

Some thoughts on retirement, and thank goodness for doctors
Dear Editor,
I am writing this letter to share with you my feelings about being retired. I've been very active all my life. With love for nature and for what I was learning, I adopted the attitude that retirement wasn't for me. I feel that retirement is one of the last steps of our life. There is an old saying, "We make our plans and God has his."
I was forced to retire because age and health have prevented me from continuing in the kind of business I was in. During the 10 months of my retirement, I found that retirement is not the end of the world. There are so many options. Being retired gives us time to find what interests us, no worries about finding a job or lost a job.
Travel is an option - if you are healthy and can afford it. Many enjoy golf. That is not my preference. We own land bordering a golf course. I watch the young and lean packing their backs with the clubs, and on some cold mornings, I can watch them blow cold steam out of their mouths. A healthy way of playing the sport! And there are the ones for health reasons who prefer riding in carts. It is a lot healthier than sitting on a sofa.
Sitting on a sofa can be addicting and not so healthy. I spend about one half-hour on my treadmill every day. I walk one half-hour with my dog every day. Gardening is what I enjoy the most. I also enjoy reading and writing. With all these to choose from, the days go fast.
Still, for the ones who go through life with the attitude of making this world a better place, we retire with the feeling that we haven't finished our job. I've got to be out there with the ones with a great pride for working hard to keep the world under control. It's not an easy job. The world is filled with great things, if you are the kind to enjoy it. To enjoy it, you have to do your share. We have those going through life depending on others. Its unfortunate for those carrying the loads. It is sad, but it is our obligation to care for them. It is not new. There have always been the ones who don't care and the ones who don't mind.
Thank God for the last ones. Being retired and having a need for health care, we owe many thanks to our doctors for their help, for the time they spend to figure out keeping us on our toes. It's not an easy job. Thank you! Thank you! This is my opinion.
