THUMBS UP: It's extraordinary but shouldn't be surprising that San Benito High School's softball and baseball teams both earned No. 1 seedings in their respective Central Coast Section playoffs. It's not a shock because the softball team has become a perennial Division 1 power, while the boys have been consistently good and are coming off a trip to the CCS title game. The historic accomplishment also is a product of intensive youth softball and baseball programs in the area. We wish both teams luck as they strive for continued success.
THUMBS UP: As the school year comes to an end, the Hollister School District deserves congratulations for what appears to be positive starts for the Dual Language Academy and Academic Achievement Academy. Superintendent Ron Crates devised the two specialty schools as a way to expand offerings to parents within the district. It's part of his broader strategy to boost enrollment numbers that have declined in recent years due to stagnant growth and parents choosing other options. If the two academies are a telling sign, there's hope the district can reverse what has become a disturbing trend.
THUMBS UP: The Hollister Municipal Airport, if the right types of development occur in that area, could be a gem for economic development. City council members' request for private development proposals for the remaining 20.5 acres at the airport garnered one bid, from Ken Lindsay of Pacific Sierra Associates. Lindsay, no doubt, is a credible developer and has the know-how and connections to make a set of projects work. Even more important to many in the area, Lindsay's plan includes land for a future CalFire base, a point of contention raised after city officials told developers they could submit proposals that didn't include the state fire agency's future expansion.
