THUMBS DOWN: After county supervisors met in a special meeting to examine the performance of County Counsel Dennis LeClere, recently under fire for guidance on the Spur Hotel project, they kept him on board and awarded the attorney a merit pay raise.
As San Benito County undoubtedly is set to make some tough decisions in the coming months and years during difficult financial times, supervisors have signaled to LeClere that he's doing a decent job by giving him a pay raise based, in name, on performance.
Based on the highest-profile consideration on which LeClere has coached officials - the Spur Hotel project - it's simply the wrong message, and at the wrong time.
THUMBS UP: When Hollister Councilwoman Monica Johnson announced she wouldn't run again, it was uncertain who might step up and pursue her seat.
Now voters in District 5 should have two apparently qualified candidates - and in all likelihood a respectful, enlightening race ahead for this November.
Architect and Planning Commissioner David Huboi and San Benito County Sheriff's Office Lt. Roy Iler have announced candidacy, and both have great potential to help lead Hollister into the future.
We wish them both luck, as well as voters who'll have a tough choice in that district.
