Thumbs up, thumbs down: COG works quickly; and a Happy 100th

Thumbs up: COG Works quickly

The Council of San Benito County Governments had a difficult task in closing off one of the city's busiest intersections to through traffic for a month at Airline Highway and Sunnyslope Road. It was the biggest closure to the bypass project, a long-awaited rerouting of Highway 25 traffic away from downtown. As it turns out, it wasn't all that bad and crews finished up in speedy fashion. COG deserves credit for mitigating any potential dangerous or overly tedious situations and getting the job done well.

Thumbs up: Casa de Fruta lasts 100 years

Casa de Fruta planted its first seeds a century ago with the Zanger brothers' first cherry stand, and they haven't stopped growing. The business has evolutionized into a multitude of attractions and options for visitors, and a gem for the area. We wish the family and their business continued success and we also encourage younger families to learn about and use Casa de Fruta and its many attractions, because we're lucky to have them so close to home.

Thumbs down: Officials quiet on rally sales

City officials have declined to release any information on merchandise sales at the 2008 Hollister Motorcycle Rally. City Manager Clint Quilter this week said those figures would be made public for the first time at a council meeting Sept. 18, more than three months after the event. That's far too long considering the city invested more than $350,000 in taxpayer dollars to buy the shirts and other merchandise, and it's hard to believe there hasn't been an accounting of revenues and costs to this point that leaders could share with the people who made the investment.

Thumbs up: Downtown courthouse optimism

County Administrative Officer Susan Thompson this week sounded optimistic the new courthouse still could be built downtown at the former Fremont School site, which is great news considering a geologic study recently found faultline "features" there. We'll cross our fingers and hope a consultant ultimately OKs the property's use, which could take two months.
