Three longtime residents who lent their service to San Benito County residents for many years have died in the past 10 days.
First was Norman Currie, who epitomized the notion of a hometown doctor and relished the role. Currie, among many other duties, delivered thousands of babies here over 41 years of service.
Former Supervisor Ruth Kesler - a longtime, active member of the county's Democratic Party - served on the county board for many years. The San Juan Bautista resident gained a reputation for being being an advocate for slow growth as a decision maker and for being straight to the point when speaking.
John O'Brien, meanwhile, served the community both in the public and private sectors. He was elected district attorney from 1958 to 1967. O'Brien later became city attorney and held the role for 24 years. Most recently, he had been a partner with a Hollister law firm.
They all showed dedication to the community over many years and will be missed dearly.
Thumbs up: Fun for a good cause
The annual Kinship fundraiser is set for Saturday. While it's always a good time, we encourage residents to attend the event because it goes toward a great cause, foster care services, and every dollar counts. There will, of course, be the wine and food tasting portion that satisfies most everyone's palates, but try to take some time to bid on items in the silent auction as well. We encourage all to enjoy the day and stay safe.
Thumbs up: Flores is at it again
Local actor Cesar Flores showed his ever-enduring talents on televisions across the world, as he starred in a Kaiser Permanente commercial that showed during the Olympics on all the major networks. Flores, a longtime El Teatro Campesino veteran, also has a movie coming out soon called "August Evening." Great job, Cesar. Keep representing San Benito County so well.
