Kudos to overlooked San Benito county agency
Oct 3, 2008

Dear Editor,

I wanted to give some well deserved kudos to an often overlooked county agency; the San Benito County Vector Control District(the District).

Although the department is relatively new and small (two full-time technicians) they are working hard to develop programs that will help make San Benito County a healthy and enjoyable place to live.

The number of abandoned houses with swimming pools and hot tubs increase daily and so does the work of the district. These pools and hot tubs are potential sources for mosquitoes and the diseases they carry, such as West Nile virus. As the district continues to search out and treat these potential sources, they also respond to calls from concerned neighbors about the unmaintained pools and spas. The threat of mosquitoes isn't just in the urban areas either. San Benito's rural area also has its challenges with mosquitoes. Irrigated fields, stock ponds, and watering troughs all have the potential to develop mosquitoes. It is nice to know that these areas are frequently monitored by the district and treated when necessary.

Even with such a heavy work load, VC technician Sean Miller has shown nothing but dedication and professionalism. His positive attitude when working with upset or concerned residents is a definite asset to the district. His promptness in responding to calls is greatly appreciated.

San Benito residents are very fortunate to have such a dedicated and responsive district.
