Anzar finds fifth, finishes fifth

King City

Searching for a fifth player as late as Monday afternoon, the shorthanded Anzar golf team found a fifth and finished in fifth place at the Mission Trail Athletic League Tournament in King City Tuesday.

The Hawks compiled a team score of 260 and finished ahead of host King City, which recorded a team score of 273.

Pacific Grove took the top spot with a 197, while Stevenson was one stroke behind, carding a 198 for second place, and Carmel was one stroke behind RLS, shooting a 199 for third place.

York came in fourth with a 227.

Anzar shot a 227 earlier this season in a dual against Palma at the Laguna Seca Golf Club, and was hoping to be competing with York on Monday. But since the Palma meet, the Hawks have lost three players to academic ineligibility, one to injury and another who is taking college courses.

Anzar was previously without Erik Olson and Steven Mockabee, who are currently playing travel basketball, but those two managed to fill in Tuesday and help the Hawks record a score.

Olson shot a 47 and Mockabee a 63, while Anzar was led by matching scores of 46 from Tim Trefts and Nick Tanouye. Ethan Petsnick rounded out the Anzar scorers with a round of 58.

Coach Will Trefts said the conditions were difficult as the greens were firm and fast.

"The wind wasn't quite as difficult as normal," Trefts said, "but the firmness and speed of the greens more than made up for it."

As a result of the shorthanded squad, the Hawks have already canceled a March 13 and March 17 meeting with San Benito, as well as a March 19 meet with Salinas.
