Katie Vest, of Hollister, recorded a time of 20.386 seconds in pole bending after her first go-round Monday at the National High School Rodeo Association finals in Farmington, N.M.

Vest, 18, who recently graduated from San Benito High School, is the lone competitor from Hollister.

Vest recorded her time on Monday morning, when she finished fifth out of 26 other competitors in the pole bending event for that particular go-round.

After all 173 contestants recorded their first go-round time in the pole bending event, Vest sat in 15th place overall.

First place was occupied by Emily Miller of Ingalls, Kan., who recorded a 19.796 on her first go-round.

Though Vest sits in 15th place, she's less than four-tenths of a second out of second place, which is currently occupied by Amanda King of Dayville, Ore. (20.036).

Vest will perform her second go-round on Friday night at McGee Park on the San Juan County Fairgrounds in Farmington, N.M.

The short go-round Championship Performance will be held on Saturday night at 7 p.m.

Only those who finish in the top 20 after two go-rounds advance to the Championship Performance.
