Santa Catalina downs Hawks in 3
Oct 30, 2008
 By Free Lance Sports Staff

MONTEREY

The Anzar Hawks were without their starting setter Thursday and lost in three games (17-25, 18-25, 20-25) to Santa Catalina in Monterey.

Anzar's Kerstin Tuning was absent from the match, and coach Chris Wardlaw was forced to move the team to a 6-2 offense, which utilizes two setters instead of one.

Wardlaw had Carly Johnson and Alex Flores distributing the ball, and although the Hawks fell in three, the coach was somewhat pleased with the performance.

"To play that well and hang tough with the best team in the league ... is a step in the right direction," Wardlaw said. "We didn't play well, but better than we have been.

"And to do it in a wacky rotation, or at least one they weren't used to, was comforting."

Santa Catalina improved to 11-1 in the Mission Trail Athletic League, while Anzar falls to 6-6, 13-12 overall.

Flores had two kills, six assists and five aces for the Hawks, and teammate Erin Deleissegeus provided eight kills, 19 digs and an ace. Camille Merz had two kills, four blocks and an ace.

Anzar will host Pacific Grove Tuesday in San Juan Bautista at 6 p.m. Wardlaw said the team will need to win in order to cement fourth place in the MTAL.
