The Gavilan men's soccer team had a golden chance to earn their first Coast Conference victory of the season Tuesday when Mission College came to town, a team it defeated 6-1 on Sept. 23 in a preseason match.
But while the Rams dominated the contest in Gilroy on Tuesday, they didn't score. It wasn't a win, and it wasn't a loss either, as Gavilan came away with a scoreless draw.
"We probably played a little bit below their level, but we didn't play good enough to win the game," Gavilan coach Albert Marques said. "Early on, we had so many opportunities that I think everyone got a little too confident and lost focus.
"I don't think the boys were used to that much offense. It's usually back and forth."
Marques said he made some changes with the offense and perhaps as a result, his team had control of the ball for the majority of the game.
"But we just couldn't put the ball in the net," Marques said. "We totally controlled the game. We dominated 90 percent of the game. We were on the field attacking. We had (an) endless amount of opportunities. It just wasn't meant to go in.
"It's been the story of our season - unlucky."
Gavilan is now 0-10-1 in the Coast Conference, 4-12-1 overall.
The Rams, with just three games remaining, will host Skyline College today at 3 p.m. in Gilroy.
