ROUNDUP: Hawks hoops looking to rebound
Nov 26, 2008
 By Free Lance Sports Staff

SAN JUAN BAUTISTA

The Anzar boys basketball team opened its 2008-09 season with a 43-27 loss on the road last Friday to Monte Vista Christian.

"And it wasn't that bad of a performance," Hawks head coach Ed Cecena said. "But they were juniors and seniors competing against our freshmen and sophomores, and they're gonna get overwhelmed."

Anzar has just eight players on its roster, and four of them are freshmen and sophomores. Mark Rania, Jason Merz and Isaac Staley return from last year's 9-18 team.

The Hawks played Live Oak on Tuesday, although no score was reported at publication.

GIRLS BASKETBALL

Despite strong all-around performances from Alyssa Rodriguez, Carly Johnson and Kelsey Robledo, the Anzar girls basketball team lost their season opener 45-36 to Soledad on Nov. 19.

The Hawks were shorthanded coming into the match, however, as power forward Nicole Mello, who averaged nearly a double-double last season, sat out with an injury.

"We're in a situation without Nicole where we have to change the way we run things a little bit," head coach Aaron Netzel said. "Against Soledad, we tried to play small ball, trying to pressure, and that didn't work out too well.

"We're gonna find out which style fits us best."

Mello is just one of four returnees from Anzar's 13-8 team last year that won the Coastal Athletic League with an 11-1 record.

Liliana Resendez also returns to Anzar, as does Alyssa Rodriguez, who had 15 points, 10 rebounds, two blocks and two steals in the season opener.

A pair of freshmen, Sydnee Masuen and Kelsey Robledo, started for the Hawks against Soledad as well. Robledo had eight points, five boards, four blocks and three steals, while teammate Carly Johnson supplied seven points and five steals.

Anzar (0-1) will return to the court on Tuesday to host their home opener against Gonzales at 6:30 p.m.

GIRLS SOCCER

The Anzar girls soccer team lost their season opener to Carmel 3-1 on Nov. 20. They will play Aptos on Wednesday.

BOYS SOCCER

The Anzar boys soccer team's match with Monte Vista Christian was postponed for a second time this week.

Originally scheduled for Nov. 19, the game was slated to be held on Tuesday, Nov. 25. But that match was postponed as well when MVC was unable to field enough players due to the Thanksgiving holiday.

No make-up date has been announced.
