More than a hundred riders from across Northern California showed up Sunday for the first-ever Harvey Bear Mountain Bike Race.

The impressive turnout nearly matched the afternoon temperature. Riders battled stiffling heat through a challenging course that took them up steep hills and into Harvey Bear Ranch County Park. Beginners did 13 miles, and the sport class and experts covered 21.

Sixty-seven beginners took part in the event, hosted by South Valley Bike and Run Club, with Matt Destro of San Jose winning the men's beginners title and Robin Kreider taking the women's.

Ryan Kish crossed in one hour, 40 minutes, 33 seconds to win the men's sport class, and Julianna Perry secured the women's title in 2:07:19.

The experts winners were Chad Deherrera (1:31:15) and Rebekah Reifsnyder (2:03:50).

A promising number of sponsors also were on hand Sunday, including Concept Cyclery, Joselyn's Bicycles, Mind, Body, Motion, Hammer Nutrition and Assured Photographs.

South Valley Bike and Run Club has more upcoming races and rides scheduled such as the Aug. 2 Mid Summer Race at Harvey Bear Ranch. Visit www.svbikeandrunclub.com for more information.
