KINGWOOD, TEXAS

John Ellis made a slight move up the leaderboard Thursday during the second stage of the PGA Tour's Qualifying Tournament after he carded a 3-under 69 at the Deerwood Golf Club in Kingwood, Texas.

Coupled with his even 72 from Wednesday, the Morgan Hill native has compiled a two-round score of 141, and has positioned himself one stroke out of a top-19 qualifying spot.

With two rounds remaining in the PGA Tour's Qualifying Tournament, also known as Q-School, a three-stage event where golfers from around the world compete to earn their PGA Tour card, Ellis remains in a strong position to advance to the third and final stage.

This year the third stage will be held at the Bear Lakes Country Club in West Palm Beach, Fla., from Dec. 2-7.

Ellis still needs to make up ground on the 19 golfers in front of him, however. But with six golfers currently sitting at the 4-under cut, the Live Oak grad and Gavilan College alum is just three strokes out of being in fourth place.

Ellis, who is making his fourth trip to the second stage of Q-School, has never advanced to the third stage. Last year at the Deerwood Golf Club, Ellis fell nine strokes short of advancing to the final stage.

Emmett Turner garnered the overall lead on Thursday after he shot a 5-under 67. The Augusta, Ga., resident is currently at 9-under through two rounds.

Ellis will tee off from the first hole at 9 a.m., on Thursday. He'll be joined by Nemanja Savic (-4) of Raleigh N.C., and Nick Beach (-3) of Fayetteville, Ark.
