Ahead 20-10 at halftime, the Anzar High girls basketball team couldn't stave off Pajaro Valley on Monday in San Juan Bautista, and lost its non-conference match-up 43-34.
It is Anzar's first loss this season, bringing the team's mark to 2-1 overall. The Hawks will return Tuesday when they host Carmel at 5 p.m.
"The great thing is we play today - a chance to redeem ourselves," Anzar head coach Aaron Netzel said.
Behind post player Kelsey Robledo's 19 points, Anzar held Pajaro Valley to single-digit point totals in both the first and second quarters, and garnered a 20-10 lead at the break.
But continueing with its full-court press in the second half, the Grizzlies eventually broke the Hawks down in the latter part of the game.
"We showed our youth and inexperience," Netzel said. "They full-court pressed us in the second half, and we let it get to us in the second half.
"Pajaro, they never quit the entire game."
The Grizzlies outscored the Hawks 16-6 in the third quarter to force a 26-all score heading into the final stanza, where Pajaro continued the scoring trend.
The Grizzlies outscored Anzar 19-6 in the fourth quarter.
"They came out their strongest," Netzel said of the fourth quarter. "They didn't let up, they challenged us, and it got a little sloppy."
Guard Melissa Weckerle had eight points for Anzar.
