SUNNYVALE

In their first outing since winning on Easter, the Hollister Headhunters 11U boys travel baseball team won the Memorial Day tournament at Twin Creeks Sports Complex with a 4-1 record.

The Headhunters topped TABU of Fremont in the championship by a 5-3 margin. It was the second time in the tournament Hollister had defeated TABU.

Tim Manderson pitched the entire game on 78 pitches, while Hollister pounded out six hits and all five runs in the third and fourth innings, including a clutch single by centerfielder Carlos Martel to score the final run.

Hollister and Fremont met up in the very first game of the tournament as well, and the Headhunters were able to squeeze out a 2-1 victory thanks to a fifth-inning single by Davonte Butler that scored Izzak Olejnik for the go-ahead run. Nico Lopez also added two hits in the game, one more than TABU's one hit total.

The Headhunters experienced their only setback during Game 2 on Sunday when they were handed a 3-2 loss to Hard 90 of Roseville in seven innings, despite a brilliant pitching performance by Olejnik in which he allowed only one earned run in six innings on just 55 pitches.

The team came back strong in Game 3, though, with a convincing 12-1 victory over Morgan Hill in just four innings behind multi-hit games by Zach Mata, Derek Moeller and T.J. Myers. Drew Williams pitched a complete game, allowing only two hits, while striking out eight.

Finishing pool play with a 2-1 record, and gaining the 2-seed as a result, the Headhunters matched up against the Radius Waves of Santa Cruz in the semifinal game. With Butler on the mound for the entire game, the Headhunters won 8-1, pounding out eight hits to reach the championship final and a second date with TABU of Fremont.

Led offensively by Myers (.571), Manderson (.429), Williams (.385) and Moeller (.308), the Headhunters will resume tournament play again in August.
